WELS Choral Fest

The WELS Choral Festival began in 1967, when students from six WELS high schools and two preparatory schools gathered at Luther High School for a weekend of worship, music, and fellowship. Under the direction of Prof. Martin Albrecht, students spent the weekend rehearsing, growing in their musical abilities, and building Christian friendships—all centered around the shared joy of praising God through song.

What started with 100 students has grown into a truly nationwide event involving hundreds of young musicians from WELS high schools, prep schools, and colleges across the country. Over the past 50 years, the Festival has been hosted in gymnasiums, theaters, auditoriums, and even large convention centers as participation has expanded.

The Festival remains committed to its original purpose: strengthening musical skills, encouraging Christian community, and deepening students’ relationship with their Savior through the gift of sacred music. Its 50th anniversary—celebrated in 2017 at the La Crosse Center—highlighted this rich tradition, bringing together over 500 students and honoring the vision that began in 1967.

Today, WELS Choral Fest continues to stand as a celebration of “God’s Word as our Great Heritage” and a cherished tradition for generations of WELS musicians.
